How to Export a GPX File from Strava

A custom GPS route transformed into a framed Raceline poster

Quick answer: open the activity on the Strava website, select the three-dot More menu, and choose Export GPX. Strava does not provide this activity export in its mobile app.

A GPX file contains the recorded route coordinates and timestamps. That makes it a practical format for moving a run, ride, hike, or race route into mapping and design tools.

Export a Strava activity as GPX

  1. Sign in to Strava on the web.
  2. Open the activity you want to export.
  3. Open the three-dot More menu on the activity page.
  4. Select Export GPX and save the downloaded file.
  5. Keep an untouched copy before editing or converting it.

Strava’s official export guide also explains account-wide downloads and the richer “Export Original” option.

GPX, TCX, or Export Original?

Choose GPX when the route line is the priority. Choose TCX when another service needs training details such as heart rate, cadence, or power. “Export Original” usually gives you the file recorded by the device—often FIT—and can preserve more sensor and device information.

For artwork, the route geometry is what matters most, so GPX is normally the simplest choice. Read our GPX vs FIT vs TCX comparison if you are unsure.

If the GPX is empty or incomplete

  • Confirm the activity contains outdoor GPS data. Indoor activities may have no route coordinates.
  • Try Export Original when a GPX omits information or fails to open.
  • Check that the activity finished syncing before exporting it.
  • Do not rename a FIT or TCX file to .gpx; the formats are structurally different.

Protect your home and work locations

A GPX can reveal exact start and finish points. Review the route before sharing it, especially if it begins at home or work. Strava applies its own visibility controls, but a file you download and send elsewhere is now in your control. Strava explains how privacy affects other athletes’ routes in its GPX privacy guidance.

Turn the route into wall art

Once you have the file, open the Raceline custom route poster and continue to the editor. Upload only the activity you want to use, adjust the composition, and approve the exact design before ordering.
