How to Get a GPX File from an Apple Watch Workout

A custom GPS route transformed into a framed Raceline poster

Quick answer: Apple Health does not provide a native “Export this workout as GPX” button. Its built-in export creates a broad XML archive of your Health data. To obtain one route, export GPX from the workout app that recorded or manages the activity.

What Apple Health exports

  1. Open the Health app on iPhone.
  2. Open Summary and tap your profile picture or initials.
  3. Select Export All Health Data.
  4. Choose where to save or share the archive.

Apple’s Health data guide explains this account-wide XML export. It is useful for backup and data portability, but it is not a convenient route-only GPX export.

The safer route-only method

Identify the app used to record or sync the workout—for example a running, cycling, hiking, or training app. Open that activity in the app and look for Export, Share, or Download GPX. If the app offers FIT instead, keep the original FIT file and convert only a copy with a trusted tool.

Do not upload the entire Apple Health archive when a service asks for a route file. The archive may contain much more sensitive information than the GPS path you intend to use.

If you cannot find an export option

  • Check the recording app’s website as well as its iPhone app; some services export only on the web.
  • Review which app wrote the workout under Health permissions.
  • Look for FIT or TCX if GPX is unavailable.
  • A workout without recorded outdoor coordinates cannot produce a meaningful route.

GPX, FIT, and TCX

GPX is usually best for route visualization. FIT can retain richer sensor and workout data. TCX sits between them and is widely used by training services. Read GPX vs FIT vs TCX before converting anything.

Privacy first

A route can expose home, work, and routine locations. A full Health archive can also include heart rate, sleep, medical, and other personal data. Share the smallest possible file with a service you trust, and keep the original private.

Make a poster from an Apple Watch route

Once you have a route-only GPX, open the Raceline custom route poster and continue to the editor. Upload the route file—not the full Health export—and approve the map before ordering.
